WCOOP 2021: UK shines on Day 11 as Glaser makes it four and Higgins wins $5K HR

We’ve got another exciting day in the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) on PokerStars to tell you about, as a mixed-game master added yet another trophy to his mantle. All the latest…

TODAY’S HEADLINES

Glaser wins a fourth
Higgins tops $5K High Roller
Another final table for Shaban
Maiden title for Team Pro’s better half

BEHIND THE HEADLINES

Glaser smiles in number four

Glaser gets it done: You can now make it four WCOOP titles in four years for one of the best mixed-game players out there: the UK’s Benny “RunGodlike” Glaser. Proving his resourcefulness, all four of Glaser’s wins have come in different variants: PLO in 2018, razz in 2019, HORSE in 2020, and now NLO8 as he took down the $55 50-M on Thursday for $9,293, defeating a 1,176-entry field. Recent champ Jerry “perrymejsen” Ödeen also made the final table and was looking for his second title of the series, but he was eliminated in fifth for $2,190. Check out our interview with Ödeen here. As for Glaser, he’s now simply one of the greatest COOP players of all time, with six SCOOP titles also on his CV.

Title no.2 for Simon “simon1471” Higgins

Huge score for Higgins: It took just over four hours for Simon “simon1471” Higgins of the UK to cut through the 107-entry field in the $5K 6-Max Turbo (53-H), after which his bankroll was topped up by $127,846. The high-stakes regular navigated his way through one of the toughest line-ups one could assemble and ultimately overcame a final table including Francisco “Tomatee” Benitez, Simon “C. Darwin2” Mattsson, and Mike “SirWatts” Watson. This is Higgins’ second WCOOP title; his first coming in 2018 when he won a $1K turbo for $98K.

Two new two-time champs: Another winner from the UK was “Sw33ney” who emerged victorious in the $530 6-Max Freezeout (53-M) for $52,307 and their second WCOOP title. They only had to wait two years to become a two-time champ, having won a $55 deepstack in 2019 for $33K. Meanwhile, Russia’s “Ebaaa11” also joined the two-time club with their huge victory in the $1K PKO (45-H) for $131,310 (including bounties). The first win for “Ebaaa11” also came in 2019, winning $68K from the $109 Sunday Warm-Up.

What a comeback for Arlie “Prince Pablo” Shaban

Wild ride for Shaban: If you were watching Arlie “Prince Pablo” Shaban’s Twitch stream last night you were in for some craziness. Shaban satellited his way into the $1K Turbo PKO (54-H) and despite his late entry he managed to run deep. With 14 left, however, he shot down to just a quarter of a big blind but miraculously managed a seemingly never-ending run of double-ups which left him with a middle stack on the final table–his third of the series. He’d ultimately fall in fourth for just shy of $16K (including bounties), as Brazil’s “drogba060193” took it down for $70,727 total. How many final tables will Shaban have by the end of the series? And will he be able to capture a title? Tune in to his stream to find out. It’s never dull.

Lauriê “LaliTournier” Tournier

Maiden title for Moraes’ better half: Brazilian pro Rafael ‘GM_VALTER’ Moraes only joined Team PokerStars on Wednesday and he’s got off to a good start, recording some healthy WCOOP cashes. But it’s Lauriê “LaliTournier” Tournier–Moraes’ wife and a great player in her own right–who has hit the ground running, winning her first WCOOP title in the $109 heads-up for $15,846 the day after her husband announced his red spade. There’s plenty of reasons to celebrate in this Moraes household this weekend! Tournier is also a Twitch streamer and you can follow her in action here.

STATES OF PLAY

A look at what’s happening in the events paused overnight:

• The $2,100 Thursday Thrill had 480 entries but just 62 now remain, all of whom are chasing the $74,175 first-place prize plus the juicy bounties that come with it. Jon “apestyles” Van Fleet and Conor “1_conor_b_1” Beresford both have top 10 stacks, while Team Pro Ben “Spraggy” Spragg is also still in contention.

• Just five players remain in the $10K 8-Game High Roller out of 44 entries, and as you’d expect, it’s a stacked line-up led by the greatest player in WCOOP history, Denis ‘aDrENaline710’ Strebkov, who is seeking an incredible 10th title. To extend his lead in WCOOP victories, he’ll have to battle through “RaulGonzalez”, Ari “BodogAri” Engel, Yuri “theNERDguy” Martins, and online poker’s all-time money winner, Joao “Naza114” Vieira. All have locked up $36,091 but there’s $196,176 up top.
