Interstate poker

Interstate poker has been given the opportunity to thrive in the United States of America following the latest judicial ruling to have occurred in the country, which could see the way online poker is played change and become even bigger in the nation.

The Wire Act legal case was a battle that was being fought by the US Department of Justice (DOJ), however, the Supreme Court’s ruling that it was limited to sports betting only was not challenged or appealed by the department by the required date, therefore allowing for new opportunities for gambling operators.

Previously, online poker operators were banned from allowing to merge players from different regions and states into one game as it was prohibited to legally gamble across state lines.

However, with the DOJ’s failure – or reluctance – to challenge the appeal of the recent review conducted by the Supreme Court, it will mean the possibility of this now happen could be greater than it ever has been.

Greater opportunity to increase revenue and liquidity

One of the things that this new ruling will do is allow the lawmakers and regulators of many of the states within America to be able to seek shared liquidity, especially if they have already made the movements to permit online poker and other gambling activities within their borders.

Two states that are considered to be amongst the best in regards to opportunity are Michigan and Pennsylvania, as both have shown that they have a large gambling population and one that will likely thrive with the possibility of playing interstate poker.

The two aforementioned states could look to join the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, which is an agreement between the states of Delaware, New Jersey and Nevada. This will mean the five states could potentially around 33 million residents instead of the 10 million or so it currently reaches.

With the barrier of entry essentially being removed, this will allow for gambling operators and state regulators to enter into different agreements and deals whereby interstate liquidity can be earned, whilst their pool of poker players from each state will be shared with each other.

By allowing for shared poker pools, more players will essentially be able to play poker games at the same levels, thus potentially improving the value that can be won at a poker table, with the larger prize pots going on to attract players who may already be playing at some of the offshore operators that are considered to be illegal.

Competition will increase

The ruling should also see a huge improvement in competition between each of the gambling operators who continue to provide their services within each state, as there should be more interest and more players able to play with the poker games that they provide.

With more bettors available to try and attract and acquire, as well as market share being available, each of the poker brands will need to work harder than ever before as they will need to make sure their promotional campaigns and bonuses that they provide are amongst the most appealing and attractive possible.
